Portal Hypertension, Due to Extrahepatic Block

Abstract
|
|
|
Eleven cases of portal hypertension caused by extrahepatic portal block are presented. Underlying basic pathology are: 8 portal vein thrombosis, 2 hepatoportal sclerosis, and a case of external portal compression by calcific tuberculous lymphnodes. Seven patients belonged to pediatric age group and all had portal vein thrombosis. Varying shunt procedures including 3 centrally placed spleno-renal, 6 conventional spleno-renal, I mesocaval, and one spleno-renal without splenectomy were used. Magnitute of decompression of portal pressure after, shunt procedure were 100~350 mm saline, thus averaging 185 min saline. There were no mortality. No bleeding occured during follow up period- varying 6 months to 13 years.
